Goodwins Theory- This theory is based on 8 principles - Links between visual + lyrics , links between music and visuals , genre charicteristics, intertextual referance , notions of looking, voyeurism, demands of a record label, preformance based, narrative base or concept based.He suggests that lyrics will make constant referances to visuals on screen.Lyrics create the general mood of the video and set the story, the shots are used and shot the way they are to put forward the meaning , whats quite common is that how ever fast the tempo is so say for example slipknot was on a music channel , there would be alot of jump cuts, split second shots and alot of quick cuts due to heavey metal being high tempo.Another technique used is quick editing , so that when they watch the music video they find it hard to grasp what the story is about which makes them watch it a few times and thats just what they want.
in the video swedish house mafia - miami to ibiza the lyrics link to the visuals when tiny quotes "she poses for fhm she likes my black lv " because theres a nice visual of her underwater looking hot . looking like shes posing.Even throughout the song the lyrics relate to the video because its all about 1 girl and were abouts they are which is on the video .

Styles of Music videos
Narrative based-A narrative based music video is a video which tells a story with the people in it, were its set and the lyrics as a guide line , for example calvin harris ft example well be coming back tells a visual story of a man driving to his death and why hes doing it.I think that this song is narrative based because its a man driving a car through a rocky mountain climate , explaining why he's there and as he's going along tyhe story gets clearer due to the visulas on the screen.Other people may say that it is preformance based because it mainly focus' on example but theres alot more to the story than him preforming, if you listen to the lyrics the story seems clearer.
Preformance based-A preformance based music video is were the visual is mostly on the preforming band or artist , a good example is evenecence- wake me up, were it just shows this women having a dream that shes on the edge of a block of flats watching this band play/communicate with her through a glass window, the visual is mostly based on the band playing.This is a diffficult one because at the start it seems to have a narrative point hence the girl falling asleep and dreaming but within the dream is a band preforming in front of the camera mostly throughout the video , although there is a side narrative (why this girl is in the dream) the main focus is on the preformance.
Concept based- A concept based music video is when the video loosely links to the song’s lyrics, this kind of video usually seems like it makes no sense when compared to the song but is created in such a way that the fans can take their own meaning away from the video, A good example of this is robbie williams, theres not really a narrative to this story , its what your imagination thinks of it.

Introduction
In this assignment , i will be analysing music videos and explaining why they video'd it the way they did, why they use certain types of theory's for example narrative.
Purposes of a music video
The purpose of a music video is to help the storytelling , and create a bigger picture in order for the viewers to understand it easier.For example lady Gaga presents her image in the song telephone by wearing unique outfits which relates to the music video because the video is weird aswell and with each outfit they wore related to the story they was trying to tell.They create the video because it supports the lyrics and back beat to all build up into one narrative.Alot of key factors to making a music video is promotional, extension of income which is were they franchise in the industry by putting the song as downloadable or putting it on a DVD , music channels etc. another is synergy and a great example of this is the new bond film , the theme song is adele skyfall which actually has some of the clips from the bond film within the video . the purpose of major labels is to make as much money as they can were as independent companies are just looking to get a fan base.
